three faan

Points

How faan turn into points, and how the points are settled after a win.

From faan to points

Faan don't add up to points directly. Each faan roughly doubles the value of the hand, so a ten-faan hand is worth far more than three three-faan hands. Two scales are common:

  • Half-spicy (半辣, bun3 laat6): points double with every faan up to 4, then with every two faan, with a step of half again in between. This is the usual Hong Kong scale and the calculator's default.
  • Full-spicy (全辣, cyun4 laat6): points double with every faan all the way up.

At a three-faan table, the rows below 3 never come up. Above the limit, the hand is scored at the limit.

Settling the points

The figure in the table is what the winner scores from a discard. Who gives up those points depends on how the hand was won:

  • Self-drawn (自摸): each of the other three players gives half, so the winner scores one and a half times the table value.
  • Discarder gives all (全銃): the player who discarded the winning tile gives the whole amount. The other two lose nothing.
  • Discarder gives half (半銃): the discarder gives half and the other two a quarter each.

All figures are half-spicy points.

Some tables have every player give the full table value on a self-draw instead of half, and some count the dealer's wins and losses double. If yours does, multiply accordingly. See house rules.
