three faan

Worked hands

Eight hands with the count explained, including a few that trip people up.

Count each hand yourself, then open the answer. All of them use the default table: three-faan minimum, ten-faan limit. The gold-edged tile is the one that won the hand; sets with a green line under them were exposed during play.

One chow too many

Seat East · East round · won on a discard · no flowers

Show the count

Every set is a chow, so it's a common hand, and there are no flowers. That's only 2. Claiming the 2-3-4 characters early cost the concealed-hand faan, and the hand can't be declared at a three-faan table.

Kept concealed and won on the same tile, it would have been exactly 3.

Dots and an East pung

Seat South · East round · won on a discard · no flowers

Show the count

Four pungs (3), one suit plus honours (3), and the East pung is the prevailing wind in the East round (1). The player sits South, so East isn't their seat wind. With no flowers, 8 faan.

The wrong flower

Seat East · East round · won on a discard · flower 3

Show the count

All bamboo: 7 for the pure suit. The flower numbered 3 belongs to West, so for an East player it scores nothing, and holding it also loses the 1 faan for no flowers.

Two dragons and a pair

Seat East · East round · won on a discard · no flowers

Show the count

Pungs of red and green with a pair of white is small three dragons, worth 5 including the two dragon pungs. Dots plus honours adds a mixed one suit (3), and the hand was concealed with no flowers. That makes 10, which is the limit at most tables.

Four concealed pungs, almost

Seat East · East round · won on a discard · no flowers

It looks like 坎坎糊, but the winning nine of bamboo came from a discard and completed a pung, so that pung counts as exposed. It scores all pungs (3), concealed (1) and no flowers (1).

Self-drawn, or won on the second South wind to complete the pair, the same tiles would be a limit hand.

One of every terminal and honour, plus a second nine of dots. It's a limit hand, so it scores the table limit; self-drawn doesn't take it any higher at a 10-faan table. On a 13-faan scale it would be 13.

East sitting East in the East round: the exposed East pung scores both seat and prevailing wind. Add no flowers and it just reaches three faan, even though the rest of the hand is plain.

Flower on the kong

Seat East · East round · self-drawn · on a kong replacement · flower 1

Show the count

The winning eight of characters was the replacement tile after an exposed kong: 1 for winning on the kong, 1 for self-drawn, and East holds flower number 1, their own flower. The hand itself scores nothing, but three faan is enough.
